Obama administration considering ramping up CIA’s role in training Syria rebel fighters: report


The CIA may be spending more time in Syria.

The Obama administration is considering plans to ramp up the agency’s role in arming and training moderate rebel fighters in Syria, U.S. officials told the Washington Post.

The expansion comes as the Pentagon creates new training bases to help insurgents locked in a civil war, trying to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The CIA currently vets and trains about 400 fighters a month, the same number expected to be trained by the Pentagon when its program reaches capacity by late next year, The Post reported.

Critics say the increased CIA involvement shows that the Pentagon program has not come together quickly enough to match the strength of Al Qaeda and ISIS.
